RVA

READ/VERIFY APPLIANCE

Overview

A tape library, with its associated drives and media, represent a significant investment in a data center’s disaster recovery and archive infrastructure. However, while storage applications provide feedback on the success or failure of a data transfer, little information is available on resource efficiency or root cause failure isolation. Data transfer failures and tape errors can be the result of a complex mix of issues relating to the tape drives, media, network, and applications. The ReadVerify Appliance (RVA) provides a non-intrusive method for monitoring, validating, analyzing, and reporting on the performance, utilization, and health of the physical tape library environment.

Key Highlights

  • Advanced Reporting for Library Optimization
  • Improve Efficiency to Reduce Storage Expenditures
  • Real-time Alerts to Minimize Data Risk
  • Simple, Non-Intrusive Installation
  • Ensure All Tape Media is Readable with Optional ArchiveVerify
Features

RVA’s Advanced Reporting feature provides enhanced flexibility for viewing behavior and operation of tape library resources. Metric comparisons across partitions or libraries provide insight into overall library operations, exposing hidden patterns to address for system optimization.

In addition to multi-metric analysis, Advanced Reporting allows multi-level drill down into the resources contributing to the selected metrics. This allows administrators to identify peak or lull usage points and deploy strategies to best use devices, likely deferring new expenditures.

RVA plugs seamlessly into the Fibre Channel SAN to collect statistics directly from the tape library and tape drives. RVA collects information during the actual data transfers, providing unique visibility into the interaction of the storage applications with the tape library resources.

RVA persistently monitors the tape environment, giving a proactive indication of data at risk. By tracking and correlating media errors evident on tapes and drives, RVA provides the means to determine how each device is performing. If degrading conditions are detected, the system delivers a warning message via email to ensure users can act quickly to minimize risk to data.

ArchiveVerify (Option)

ArchiveVerify is an optional feature for the ReadVerify Appliance that reduces the risk of losing data stored on tape media and lowers costs associated with tape backup and archive. Enabling users to insure what has been written to tape media can be read, AV provides an automated process based on administrator-applied policies for selected tape pools. Verification procedures are automatically initiated. Full analysis is conducted on the entire written length of tape media. Reporting capabilities also fulfill requirements for regulatory compliance audits.

QuickVerify for LTO media, a feature of AV, gathers a wide variety of cartridge data, providing detailed visibility into the cartridge history.
